ABSTRACT

Given the alternative, everyone should look forward to being old. With increasing age comes knowledge and, in some cases, wisdom. Unfortunately, knowledge and wisdom have companions in the form of physical and mental decline, ultimately leading to loss of independence, dementia, and death. This chapter examines the changes that occur in the visual system and circadian system with increasing age, the consequences these changes have for visual capabilities, and how lighting can be used to offset some of these changes so that the quality of life of the elderly may be sustained.
