ABSTRACT
Artificial changes in acid-base balance can be induced by the ingestion of certain pure preparations such as ammonium chloride, which produces a metabolic acidosis, and sodium bicarbonate, which produces a type of metabolic alkalosis. The observation of changes in PaCO2 and pH are useful in understanding the compensatory mechanisms in the normal state.
