ABSTRACT

Viscosity Viscosity is the property of a fluid that tends to prevent it from flowing when it is subjected to an applied force. The tenacity with which a moving layer or lamina drags adjacent layers with it determines its viscosity. Laminar or streamline flow can be likened to a pack of cards, where the top card is pushed along its long axis (Figure 37.43). The rest of the cards move by friction, but at different velocities. To keep the cards moving requires a continuous application of the applied force (Figure 37.43a).
