ABSTRACT

Look for a cause for the CVA (hypertension, excess anticoagulation, heart disease) and treat it appropriately. Otherwise, the extent of the stroke must be recorded carefully, both for baseline data and for medicolegal reasons. If there has been an accurate diagnosis of thromboembolic disease, the patient may be on anticoagulant or antiplatelet drugs. This therapy must be continued unless there are serious indications to the contrary.
