ABSTRACT

CONSEQUENCES OF ADHESION OF DOSAGE FORMS Delay in drug absorption Retention of the dosage form in the oesophagus can delay drug absorption and consequently the onset of action (Figure 4.7)22. Drugs cannot easily pass through the stratified squamous epithelium of the oesophageal mucosa. Passage of the drug into the stomach and through to the small intestine where they are absorbed will be dependent upon the disintegration time of the unit in the oesophagus.
