ABSTRACT

Victoria, in partnership with local government and other Australian states and territories, is driving spatial data infrastructure (SDI) development through unique intra-and inter-jurisdictional partnerships at the local, state and federal levels of government. Although the benefits of partnerships between levels of government are well recognized within the SDI concept, the number of successful partnerships that have been forged has been limited (Jacoby et al., 2002). To reinforce SDI concepts, this chapter will introduce Victoria’s SDI initiatives and successful partnerships led by the principle agency responsible for land administration in the State, Land Victoria. The chapter demonstrates how Land Victoria is meeting the spatial information requirements of local and state government, private sector, and the community. It also sets out the Victorian view that a comprehensive SDI has both transactional and ‘whole dataset’ perspectives, and that these approaches need to be tightly integrated.
