ABSTRACT

Previous chapters have introduced the concept and hierarchy of a Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) and reviewed SDI initiatives from a Global to a Local perspective. However, associated with the implementation of these initiatives are important technical, economic, institutional and socio-political issues. An SDI typically crosses different political and organizational boundaries, and ensuring its ultimate success depends on employing the diverse collective skills of people of different organizational and environmental cultures. Understanding these issues will be essential to the successful implementation and maintenance of an SDI.
