ABSTRACT

The structural properties of the Fourier transforms of moving objects have been exploited to estimate motion parameters. The phase correlation

method was proposed to retrieve translational displacements from phase shifts [15]. Extensions of this method have been advanced to estimate rotational motion, as well [16, 17, 18]. These frequency domain methods have the important advantage that they use all the information available and not just the information associated with sets of features. Therefore, the delicate issues associated with the correspondence problem can be avoided and the methods can be rather robust against noise or image impairment, as the analysis of [19] and [20] highlights. Furthermore, if the algorithmic steps necessary to extract the motion parameters are able to preserve the original information, these techniques may be potentially highly accurate as well [20].
