ABSTRACT

Efficient compression techniques are necessary for even the higher 3G bit rates [5]. As an example, a standard TV 24-bit color video with 640 × 480 pixels at 30 frames per second requires 221 Mb/s. Compression tools make it possible to support multimedia contents, often at a reduced resolution. Perspective standardization of compression algorithms should allow interoperability among terminals from different companies. However, many standards exist for several applications, depending on system resources, content type, and the quality required by the user. Moreover, popular nonstandard formats are widely employed, involving flexible devices and adaptive programming.
