L.) is an important spice grown in Greece, Spain, Turkey, Iran, India, and Morocco. In folklore medicine,
as well as in modern pharmacy, saffron has been reputed to be
useful in treating numerous human diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases (Grisolia, 1974; Abdullaev, 1993) and neurodegenerative disorders accompanying memory impairment (Abe and Saito, 2000).
