ABSTRACT
In this chapter we survey classical latent variable models. The point of describing these models is threefold: first, to give an overview of how latent variables are traditionally used in various branches of statistics; second, to familiarize the reader with basic ideas, notation and terminology used later in the book; third, to start unifying different approaches in preparation for the general model framework discussed in Chapter 4.
