ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we argue that carrier networks are changing through an evolutionary, not a revolutionary, migration process. As a result, end-to-end networks with SONET, optical, and packet sub-networks will exist for some time to come. We examine the consequences of this evolutionary migration process on the end-to-end provisioning and network control processes, discuss the protocols and net management structures being developed, and discuss their use in a technology mixed networking world. We begin with a description of the reasons for migration and end with an examination of algorithms relevant to provisioning and control in a mixed packet, SONET, and optical networking infrastructure.
