ABSTRACT

Since the anthrax attacks of 2001, a large number of questions have been raised by the medical and public health communities, governmental officials, unions representing health care workers, the postal service, representatives of “first responders” such as police and fire department personnel, and emergency medical personnel regarding preparations for potential future attacks. In addition, the news media and the public have sought answers to many of the same questions. In this chapter, we have identified what we believe to be the central frequently asked questions regarding bioterrorism and have attempted to provide answers as well as direction in obtaining further information. The critical question “How likely is a bioterrorism attack” remains largely unanswerable. The probability of an attack, if calculable, would dictate much more precisely the most productive steps to be taken to minimize casualties and respond effectively. At present, however, the answers to the following frequently asked questions must represent “best guess” responses based on previous experience, exercises and drills that have been conducted, and common sense. We have divided this chapter into questions that any member of the public might have to assist in guiding health care providers in answering them. In addition, we have included questions of particular relevance to health care workers themselves, the primary intended readership of this book.
