ABSTRACT

The shallow water code SWAN and the incompressible NavierStokes code ZUNI have been used to model the development of a tsunami wave from an initial sea surface displacement, the propagation of a tsunami wave, and the resulting shoaling and flooding. The generation and propagation of a tsunami wave has also been modeled using a linear gravity model. The discrepancies between the shallow water and the more realistic Navier-Stokes and linear gravity models are quantified. These studies were performed by the author at the University of Hawaii Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research in the late 1980s and were published in references 1, 2 and 3.
