ABSTRACT

A widely recognized distinction in KM is Polanyi’s distinction between tacit knowledge (knowledge contained in the minds of humans, sometimes called personal knowledge) and explicit knowledge (which has been referred to as codified knowledge). Polanyi has also indicated that much tacit knowledge can be made explicit even though much of it will remain unexpressed (see Figure 6.1). Therefore, for knowledge to become explicit it must first have been tacit. In this chapter, we explore explicit knowledge in more detail.
