ABSTRACT

The purpose of any examination should be established prior to the start of a preliminary assessment. Is the specimen a questioned sample or is it a source of known material or information? Is the sample to be identiÞed or otherwise classiÞed? Is it to be compared to another sample in an attempt to establish common origin or is it to be cleaned or restored? Where should the questioned or known specimen be removed from the object? How should the specimen be removed?
