Integration is the process of combining partial functionality to form the overall system functionality

Because imaging systems are embedded, the integration process involves both multiple software units and hardware. Each of these parts has potentially been developed by different teams or individuals within the project organization. Although they have been rigorously tested and verified separately, the overall behavior of the system, and conformance with most of the software requirements, cannot be tested until the system is wholly integrated. Software integration can be further complicated when both hardware and software are new.
