ABSTRACT

There once was an innkeeper in ancient Greece who was concerned about the comfort of his guests. He had a set of beds that were all the same size. Some of Procrustes’ guests were tall, too tall for the beds in the inn. For these people, Procrustes simply cut their legs off so that the guests would fit the bed. For those guests who were too short for the beds in Procrustes’ inn, he had a rack. He would place the short guests on his rack and make them longer. The bottom line was that everyone fit Procrustes’ beds when they went to bed.
