ABSTRACT

The second edition of this manual has expanded the scope of the original Standard Handbook for Solid and Hazardous Waste Facility Assessments to include the additional scope of site investigations for the evaluation of the selection and implementation of ground-water remediation. Since publication of the first edition in 1994, significant strides have been made in the technology of site investigations. These advances in site investigation technology evolved around direct push equipment used to collect samples without actually drilling a hole. These direct techniques were significantly advanced by analytical and physical measuring devices placed in the probe. This second edition is intended to assist those individuals planning, performing and interpreting investigations for virtually any site-based monitoring or assessment program to obtain samples of soil or ground water from the subsurface. This monitoring can be for detection, assessment or performance monitoring programs. The flow diagram presented in Figure 1-1 applies to the majority of these monitoring programs.
