ABSTRACT

Now that wireless, Internet Protocol (IP)-based and combinations of both communication systems have become pervasive networking standards, the transmission of voice over IP and wireless becomes a topic of high relevance. This chapter briefly describes the fundamental issues involved in speech coding for those environments including descriptions of the most suitable speech coding standards, the specific troubles that this transmission encounters, the technological barriers together with their current solutions and the most active lines of research associated. A short introduction to the challenges that the transmission of voice over IP over wireless encompasses is provided as well. Human-to-machine scenarios are also considered, as they are likely to be very common in the new applications that make use of these modern networks. Special emphasis will be placed on how network-related distortions affect the performance of automatic speech recognizers. The chapter is completed with the conclusions and some of the envisaged challenges.
