ABSTRACT
In the presence of multipath fading channels, the received signal experiences great attenuation while the channel is in deep fade, resulting in the loss of transmitted information. This loss can be reduced by combining signals received over several independent fading channels. The reason for the reduction in information loss is that the likelihood of all signals experiencing deep fade simultaneously is considerably less than that experienced by individual signals.
