ABSTRACT

This chapter is intended to provide a summary of selected definitions and concepts of matrix and operator theory that underlie sensitivity and uncertainty analysis of data and models. The topics covered for this purpose are matrices, linear operators and their adjoints in finite and infinite dimensional vector spaces, and differential calculus in vector spaces. The material covered in this chapter serves as a self-contained mathematical basis for sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, and is provided for easy reference. Note, though, that the material presented in this chapter does not contain detailed examples for illustrating the various mathematical concepts, and is not intended to serve as a replacement for the many excellent textbooks on the respective mathematical topics. A list of suggested reference mathematical textbooks is provided in the Reference Section of this book.
