ABSTRACT

Two problems requiring special attention in the design of wireless sensor network nodes are the problems of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electrostatic discharge (ESD). These problems often require a systemlevel view, incorporating several engineering and nonengineering specialties, if they are to be solved properly, and are particularly troublesome in wireless sensor network nodes, due to their small size, low cost, ubiquity, and need to function with a variety of other systems in a variety of environments. This chapter discusses the EMC of wireless sensor network nodes, especially the interference problems network nodes can induce in themselves due to the inherent proximity of digital and radio frequency (RF) circuits in their miniaturized designs. Chapter 10 discusses ESD.
