ABSTRACT
Phase I (initiation): When something (such as a free radical, carcinogen, or radiation) irreversibly alters a cell’s genetic makeup, it causes the cell to divide more frequently than it should.
Phase II (promotion): When the damaged or genetically altered cell fails to fix its own damage, it goes into uncontrolled growth.
