ABSTRACT

The way Web pages link to each other brings about a structure. This structure is dynamic, with pages and links being added and removed frequently. The dynamism of the structure gives rise to interesting properties that also hold for other complex systems. From a theoretical standpoint, understanding why or how these properties emerge is important. Models that can explain the structural properties of the Web are crucial to the study of their intrinsic properties in more depth. From a practical standpoint, the Web structure can be exploited to devise heuristics for Web applications, such as ranking query results from a Web search or identifying communities of Web pages.
