ABSTRACT

This chapter provides guidance on how emergency responders can best minimize exposure to weapons of mass destruction that utilize no explosives (e.g., aerosol delivery of chemical or biological agent) or include conventional explosives (e.g., dirty bombs). Chapter 5 provides guidance on minimizing exposure when responding to a nuclear explosion. Three factors are inherent in radiation protection philosophy are utilized to keep exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA): time, distance, and shielding. While this philosophy was derived from the radiation protection industry, it is also effective in minimizing exposure to chemical and biological agents.
