Changes made during the operational phase of a manufacturing facility are often ill thought out, inconvenient, disruptive, and at best, frustrating. For these reasons alone, they should be avoided unless absolutely essential. Another reason for leaving well alone is the cost. It is universally accepted that this is the most expensive time for making any alterations (Figures 4.1 and 4.2).
