ABSTRACT

KVD is a design agency focusing on product and product support, based in Amsterdam. Design requires and involves a redefinition of design starting points at the conceptual

level. It is not about cosmetic redesign. Designing is the investigation of the kernel of things; to challenge what may appear to be fixed or a given and discover new ways of interpretation. This is what will be referred to as ‘REFRAMING' When thinking about new products it is easy to become fixated on its hardware. The manifestation of a product is one of the tools to express its’ identity. The origin however, is embodied in its relationship with the user. It is about the qualitative interaction with the user: the product experience. Since we live in a society of continuous change, many products do not/no longer evoke the intended effect with its users: they are/become ‘misfits’ in time. For products to ‘fit’ to their context, one needs to understand future needs, desires as well as concerns of users. Using the product design strategy FIT and the product support strategy HIT, fulfils this need.
