ABSTRACT

Epigenetic effects are apparent in multicellular animals and plants. Inactive chromatin has higher levels of 5-methyl cytosine. In vertebrates the cytosine in 5′CpG3′ dinucleotides may be enzymatically methylated while in plants the main target is 5′CNG3′ triplets (N = any nucleotide). Invertebrates do not extensively methylate cytosine but have equivalent condensed heterochromatin.
