ABSTRACT
A definition of pain is that which occurs as ‘an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage’ (The International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP) as quoted by Forrest, 1998). Though pain is mediated by biochemical algogens that are mediators released from injured tissues and activate nociceptors, it is actually a psychobehavioural and sensory experience achieved by this process of activation of nociceptive pathways (Forrest, 1998).
