ABSTRACT

Environment and development, once thought to be separate issues, are now considered as complementary to each other so as to ensure that human progress does not exhaust the resources of future generations. Safeguarding the environment requires sustainable development that guarantees a perpetuation of resources and skills that will meet tomorrow’s needs. Thus, sustainable development would demand more than pollution control and more than mere compliance with environmental regulations. It would necessitate pragmatic technological initiatives involving preservation of the biosphere, selection of cleaner technologies, and gainful recycling of wastes.
