Introduction

When we wrote the first edition of Capital City, in the years between 1969 and 1973, the chapters fell quite naturally under headings such as ‘Branch banking’ or ‘Money market banking’. The functions which these headings described were, by and large, carried out by separate institutions: so under ‘Branch banking’ we could comfortably dispose of the clearing banks and under ‘Money market banking’ of the merchant banks.
