ABSTRACT
A large number of people in Britain see the City as a parasitical growth on the economy. It is inhabited by rich, arrogant young men and cigar-smoking tycoons, interested only in making money for themselves. They have no sense of responsibility for the national good, no ideas and no morals. They make vast fortunes from share speculation, property speculation and commodity speculation, activities which are no more than legalised gambling and require neither intelligence nor effort. They loathe the working classes and the welfare state, and they pay the Conservatives millions of pounds to try to keep any other party out of power.
