ABSTRACT
When most people think of the clearing banks, they think first of the bank branch on the corner of the High Street. The clearing banks, indeed, still tend to present themselves as being first and foremost in the business of personal banking. ‘Our roots are our branches,’ said a famous National Westminster advertisement. Most of the people who staff the clearing banks, and many of those who run them, have spent much of their working lives in personal banking.
