ABSTRACT

14.a.1. Bosley, A. R., Newcome, R. G., and Dauncey, M. E., Maternal smoking and apgar score, Lancet, 1, 337—338, 1981. Retrospective study of 26,576 births from Cardiff Birth Survey. Excess of low Apgar scores for women smoking 10 to 19 cigarettes per day only occurred when criterion for Apgar scores less than six was used. When birthweight was taken into account, reduction in Apgar scores for infants born to mothers who smoked was not greater than would be expected due to impairment associated with decreased birthweight alone.
