ABSTRACT

16.a.1. Bergman, A. B. and Wiesner, L. A., Relationship of passive cigarette-smoking to sudden infant death syndrome, Pediatrics, 58, 665—668, 1976. A higher proportion of sudden infant death syndrome was found among mothers who smoked during pregnancy compared to controls matched for age, sex, and race. Mothers of these children also were more apt to smoke after pregnancy. Fathers also were more apt to be smokers but differences were not significant. Birthweights of infants with sudden infant death did not differ from controls. Passive smoking enhances the risk of sudden infant death.
