Analysis of 53,518 pregnancies from Collaborative Perinatal Project with respect to fetal and neonatal deaths and maternal smoking. Mothers were categorized as smoking throughout pregnancy or having stopped smoking at time of first antenatal visit. Frequency of abruptio placenta and placenta previa were greater among women who continued smoking than in women who stopped smoking during pregnancy. Perinatal mortality due to two disorders was significantly reduced when mothers stopped smoking. Frequency of necrosis in decidua basal is at margin of placenta was considerably reduced in mothers who stopped smoking.
