ABSTRACT
Chapter 5 introduces readers to geographic information systems (GIS) tools in R, with a focus on the tigris R package for acquiring and handling US Census Bureau geographic datasets. Readers learn how to rapidly acquire and plot Census geographic datasets in R; understand GIS topics like vector data, simple features, and coordinate reference systems; and perform advanced tasks like "shifting" Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico for improved cartographic display of the United States.
