ABSTRACT

The n-butyl ester of 2,4,5-Trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) in formulations is released into the environment during spraying operations, or from spills. Both Agent Orange and Agent Purple contained 50% of the n-butyl ester of 2,4,5-T along with other chlorophenoxyacetate esters. The 2,4,5-T, n-butyl ester can pollute water from runoff or deposition after spraying operations. Sources of the n-butyl ester of 2,4,5-T in air are a result of spraying or volatilization from plants, soil or water surfaces after spraying. It may exist in air as the vapor or fine droplets which do not settle in the target area and may be transported and settle or be washed out in adjacent areas. Agricultural workers may be exposed to 2,4,5-T, n-butyl ester during spraying operations using herbicides containing this chemical. The general population in areas of the country where this herbicide is used may be exposed from ambient air since there is evidence that such pesticides may be transported moderate distances.
