ABSTRACT

A number of job design and employee screening procedures have been developed, based on either the psychophysical, the physiological, the biomechanical, or the epidemiological design criterion. The last revision included a brief description of how this guide may be used in designing/analysing multiple-task Manual materials handling (MMH) jobs. The generalized manual materials handling job design/evaluation procedure is based on the concept that a person's ability to perform a manual materials handling job is based on his/her capability to perform individual tasks that make up that job. The concept of a procedure that can assist in the design and analysis of a multiple-task MMH job was first proposed by Mital. The majority of job design/redesign/analysis procedures, including the users' manual associated with the revised NIOSH guidelines are, however, for a specific MMH task. Manual handling jobs which comprise a single task are a rarity in industry.
