ABSTRACT

This chapter contends that ( 1 ) it is essential to recognize that there is an hierar chical organization within the dissolution conduits which dominates the permeability structure of karst aquifers and (2) there is a consequent difficulty in modeling karstic hydraulic behavior. This discussion will reveal that the all-important dissolution voids found in karst aquifers were actually created by the flow system and that the resulting permeability structure is inherently anisotropic.
