ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the "optimization" of climate control. That is, to control the setpoints, constraints, and limits such as to maximize the net profit or reduce the operational cost objective functions. In the 1970s, computers were available for climate control in Holland. Artificial intelligence in computer sciences is the development and use of computer systems that have some resemblance to human intelligence, including operations as natural language recognition and use, problem-solving, selection from alternatives, pattern recognition, and generalization based on experience. From a horticulturist's point of view, the introduction of so many new ideas in greenhouse climate control leaves the plantsman feeling dismayed. In the greenhouse, nearly all signals from sensors continuously varying in amplitude and over time, whether current or voltage. There are at least four important attributes required of a control system: stability, accuracy, sensitivity, and reliability.
