ABSTRACT

This chapter examines projection tools and applications, programming languages, libraries, and tools. It discusses learning about map projections and map projection galleries. The chapter presents a selection of websites where mapmakers can design their own projection, and explores distortion patterns on projections, or receive guidance on selecting a projection. Adaptive Composite Map Projections demonstrates a method for selecting projections for web map services according to the latitude and geographic scale of the mapped area. Projection Wizard provides a simple approach to the complex problem of finding an appropriate projection. The Wizard requires two user inputs: the area to be mapped, and the desired projection property. The user first selects a projection property along a continuum between conformal and equal area, and then specifies the latitude of the standard line. Comparing Map Projections is a free, online interactive application that offers a way to quantitatively compare distortion across different projections.
