Saddle Shape and Minimal Surfaces It is easy to see whether you are dealing with a flat twodimensional surface: just put this surface on a table and try to flatten it. If it lies evenly, then it is flat or, as you now know, it is a surface with zero curvature. But if the surface is not flat, how can you find out whether it is positively or negatively curved?
