ABSTRACT

Fatigue and shiftwork are two temporal aspects of job design. Reduce fatigue so workers can maintain/increase productivity and have "optimal" stress. Good ergonomic practice reduces high stress levels on the person. This chapter focuses on seven guidelines. The seven guidelines are divided into fatigue prevention and fatigue reduction. They are have a work scheduling policy, optimize stimulation during work, minimize the fatigue dose, use work breaks, give frequent short breaks, maximize the recovery rate, and increase the recovery/work ratio. To generalize about working hours is difficult as there are large differences, even in one country, depending on type of work, full- versus part-time work, season of the year, overtime, and absenteeism. The chapter provides information on static work, dynamic work, and video display terminal (VDT) work. VDT work combines static load on the shoulders and back with dynamic work on the fingers. Four aspects are: time before a break, break length, microbreaks, and active/working/passive rest.
