ABSTRACT

The primary resources of any group are the skills of its people. The primary instruction medium is visual; the message can be pictorial or text. This chapter provides recommendations on how to improve messages. The worker can be trained or given a job aid. In either case, the training material is important. Because training is temporary, health and safety problems normally should be solved with permanent engineering solutions rather than temporary training solutions. Two divisions are programmed learning and enhanced training. Three training principles are: practice, part-task, and training wheels. "Practice makes perfect" has been known for a long time. The gap between actual and desired performance can occur four ways: static job and static worker, static job and changing worker, changing job and static worker, and changing job and changing worker. The chapter provides information on three parts of organizing information planning, drafting, and revising. The text message is discussed in categories of words, style, and format.
