ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses some key techniques and methodologies useful in the development process. It describes in more detail the specific methodologies and techniques needed for concurrent engineering (CE). A significant piece of the CE process is the proper and efficient use of key methodologies and techniques. Techniques and methodologies have emerged as a more reliable practice in facilitating key decisions in the design process. Several methodologies and techniques are useful in the development process. Selection of specific techniques should be based upon product impact and ease of implementation. The competitor’s products were costed out by the manufacturing team member during the reverse engineering process. Design for manufacturing (DFM) has been evolving in the United States over a period of years. The concept stage of design is the point at which design decisions and manufacturing inputs can play their largest role. For many areas of manufacturing there exist rules and guidelines as an approach to DFM.
