ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of common textile test methods which can be used to test industrial fibers, yarns and fabrics. There are four main reasons for testing: Control of product, Control of raw materials, Process control, and Analytical information. Any testing which is to be done on a product will need to be done by employing standard test methods. There are two major organizations which write standard tests for textiles. The American Society for Testing and Materials writes standard tests not only for textiles but also for virtually every other product such as steel, plastics lumber, and so on. Another organization which writes standard tests for textiles is the American Association of Textile Chemists and Colorists. Many textile materials are sensitive to temperature and relative humidity. When testing them, it is necessary that the environment be stipulated and held constant. Fiber analysis includes identification, physical properties, quality of natural fibers as well as other characteristics.
