ABSTRACT

Some methods such as Kepner-Trego (K-T) are excellent for problem solving; others such as Taguchi Methods are best for manufacturing quality improvement, and still others for simplifying products for manufacture. The Toolbox matrix compares the attributes of each method and offers a method for evaluating others as they may be developed. The need for a better wrench has developed sockets and open-end wrenches that are often designed for special applications and have not only increased safety but made the mechanic's job easier and faster. Zero-Based Budget is another system that has fallen out of favor because it has been deemed too complex and time consuming. Some companies, however, have found it to be extremely useful in smaller development programs, and in addition, it contains aspects that can be invaluable in applying target cost methods. The Value Engineering system forces people to think differently to develop new products and services based on best value.
