ABSTRACT

In this chapter, experimental turbulent structures in two-dimensional (2-D) open-channel flows are examined on the basis of the theoretical considerations discussed in Chapter 2. Standard data for 2-D open-channel turbulence have become available only since the development of suitable instruments in the last 20 years, in contrast to the older standard data for boundary-layer and closed-channel flows. Comparisons herein are concentrated on the effect of the free surface on turbulent structures, because of their unique applicability to open-channel flows.
